WELS West Region Band Fest
March 20-22, 2020
Great Plains Lutheran High School will be the host school for the 60th Annual WELS Band Festival. The festival band will be made up of approximately 80 students from 9 WELS Area Lutheran High Schools. The concert, featuring music “From Sea to Shining Sea,” will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the GPLHS gymnasium and everyone is welcome to attend the concert. There is no admission charged, but a free-will offering will be taken to help offset the cost of hosting the festival. Not able to join us in person? Clinicians: Dr. Terry Beckler and Wes Schmandt
Dr. Terry Beckler is professor of percussion and associate director of bands at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.
Previously, he was director of bands at Southwest Minnesota State University (Marshall, MN) and at Huron University (Huron, SD). He has 10 years of public school experience as band director for the Red Rock Central (Lamberton, Minn.) and Sioux Valley (Volga, S.D.) school districts. Dr. Beckler holds degrees from South Dakota State University, The University of Northern Colorado and The University of Minnesota. In 2018, Dr. Beckler was named Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Bandmaster for South Dakota. That same year, he was inducted into the Aberdeen Central High School Alumni Hall of Fame.
Dr. Beckler has been a member of the 147th Army Band based in Mitchell, S.D., for more than 30 years. He enlisted in 1986 as a percussionist and, since 1998, has been commander/conductor of this group. In January of 2006, the 147th Army Band was awarded the Howard Citation of Musical Excellence from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Dr. Beckler holds the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 and serves as the Army National Guard Deputy Senior Bandmaster. He is an active clinician in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota and a former member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps.
